Newtown Cultural Precinct, located in the inner city of Johannesburg is the cultural district of Johannesburg.

Newtown Cultural Precinct is the cultural hub of Johannesburg and offers great entertainment such as music, poetry, dance, theatre, art galleries, museums, craft markets, buskers, clubs and intense nightlife.

Attractions & Things to Do & See in the Newtown Cultural Precinct include;
  • Mary Fitzgerald Square is the central point of Newtown that hosts to a number of local and international performers, events and festivals.
  • Nelson Mandela Bridge - Nice bridge that links Braamfontein to Newtown.
  • Newtown Park - Beautiful park that hosts variety of art activities and picnics.
  • Museum Africa - It is the premier history and cultural museum of Johannesburg and housed in the place that was once the city's first fruit and vegetable market that was built in 1913.
  • The Workers’ Museum - It is an original municipal compound that is now serving as a museum of labour migration under the management of Museum Africa.
  • South African Breweries World of Beer - SAB World of Beer offers an informative tour prior to the  beer origins dating back to 6000 years and demonstrates the beer making process. There is also a pub that the visitors are able to enjoy beer after the tour of the facility.
  • Sci-Bono Discovery Centre - It is the largest science centre in South Africa. The science center includes a collection of interactive hands-on exhibits and several activities related to mathematics, science and technology which are great and enjoyable especially for the kids.
  • The Market Theatre Precinct - The Market Theatre has a daily flea market. Locally made jewellery, clothing, fabric and other craft items are the spots of the market. Also there are several small craft shops.
  • Oriental Plaza - It is known for its exotic variety of fabrics sold at discount prices. There are no fixed prices - as in eastern markets, bargaining is part of the experience. Local and international brands are also sold at reduced prices.
  • Xarra Bookshop - It is the first bookshop of South Africa that is related to African literature, culture, film, art and music.
  • Bassline - It is a great live entertainment and music venue in Newtown, Johannesburg worth of its jazz and blues performances. For the African rap and hip hop lovers, the venue is also an ideal place. It offers Jazz, reggae, afrobeat, rock, hip-hop, kwaito, house, marrabenta, folk, rap, ragga, ska, latin, highlife, pop, blues, soul, rhythm music.

Shopping in Newtown is great for the visitors with the markets, many specialist craft shops, items ranging from African instruments to homeware, textiles,  jewellery, indigenous ornaments and clothes.

Eating out & nightlife in Newtown is spectacular. Newtown offers variety of nice places for dining & wining to its visitors that ranges from light contemporary meals to traditional African food. During nights visitors may find mellow live jazz, a late night party, or an evening of dancing to the latest talent from South African and international artists, bands and DJs.
