Things to
do in Johannesburg
As well as
the standard shopping trips – an essential
part of any destination – there are plenty
of
things to
in Johannesburg keep you busy. Perhaps
most interesting of all, and certainly for
budding anthropologists, is the Cradle of
Humankind, where the earliest human remains
have been found. Now a World Heritage Site,
it is open to visitors who want to discover
more about our ancestors.
Tours of the
city are also available. A half-day tour
takes you around the historical downtown
buildings, where you will learn about the
formation of Johannesburg. En route, you’ll
see the impressive Post Office Tower. At the
Carlton Centre you will enjoy a magnificent
panorama from the 50th floor –
locally known as ‘the top of Africa’. You’ll
also see the Brixton Tower, the affluent
Houghton district and the Supreme Court, as
well as the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newton,
and Constitution Hill, home to South
Africa’s Constitutional Court and site of
the Old Fort Prison. At the end of the day
you will visit the Botanical Gardens at
Emmerentia.
Travelling so
far, you will probably want to include more
of this great continent during your trip –
namely, the wildlife for which Africa is
famed. A few hours drive from Johannesburg
is the Kruger National park, one of the
best places in the world to see big
game. Also close by,
Sun City is an idyllic holiday village
nestling amongst lush forest and awesome
mountains. Sun City is just 140km from
Joburg.
Perhaps the
best thing about this part of the world is
just how much value for money you get in
terms of food and attractions. The cost of
living is less than half that of London,
giving you more money to spend on the things
you want. |
