All Inclusive Holidays: Johannesburg

The all inclusive holiday is one of the surest ways to save money on your annual vacation. Although commonly associated with Spanish or Greek resorts, the all inclusive holiday actually began life as a way of making long-haul trips more affordable. Among Thomas Cook’s most popular long-haul destinations is Johannesburg.

The largest and most cosmopolitan South African city, Johannesburg is one of the liveliest places you will ever experience. Known as the City of Gold ever since the precious metal was discovered in the 19th Century, it is undoubtedly the commercial centre of South Africa – and still regarded as the gold capital of the world. Johannesburg Airport is "O R Tambo International Airport" and is located 22 km. (14 miles) on the east of Johannesburg. South African Airways (SAA) ( is the national airline company. You may easily find direct and indirect flights to Johannesburg by the major airline companies from all over the world. Approximate flight times; i.e. 11 hours from London and 19 hours from New York. There are several budget airways making cheap flights to Johannesburg.

Things to do in Johannesburg

As well as the standard shopping trips – an essential part of any destination – there are plenty of things to do in Johannesburg keep you busy. Perhaps most interesting of all, and certainly for budding anthropologists, is the Cradle of Humankind, where the earliest human remains have been found. Now a World Heritage Site, it is open to visitors who want to discover more about our ancestors.

Tours of the city are also available. A half-day tour takes you around the historical downtown buildings, where you will learn about the formation of Johannesburg. En route, you’ll see the impressive Post Office Tower. At the Carlton Centre you will enjoy a magnificent panorama from the 50th floor – locally known as ‘the top of Africa’. You’ll also see the Brixton Tower, the affluent Houghton district and the Supreme Court, as well as the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newton, and Constitution Hill, home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court and site of the Old Fort Prison. At the end of the day you will visit the Botanical Gardens at Emmerentia.

Travelling so far, you will probably want to include more of this great continent during your trip – namely, the wildlife for which Africa is famed. A few hours drive from Johannesburg is the Kruger National park, one of the best places in the world to see big game. Also close by, Sun City is an idyllic holiday village nestling amongst lush forest and awesome mountains.  Sun City is just 140km from Joburg.

Perhaps the best thing about this part of the world is just how much value for money you get in terms of food and attractions. The cost of living is less than half that of London, giving you more money to spend on the things you want.

Johannesburg weather is relatively dry, and about six million trees, including the largest man-made forest in the world - with trees planted in the nineteenth century to provide wood for the mining industry. The best summer times in Johannesburg is between November and February. Average temperature is 25C. The coldest times is between July and August with an average temperature of 10-17C  daytime and 4C at nights.
