One of the most popular places in Johannesburg is the Johannesburg Theatre. It is one place where entertainment is at its best. The present day Theatre Complex building was built as early as 1962.
The complex houses not one but three theatres. Along with the theatres, there is a cafeteria where one can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee with family and friends. For those who are dance enthusiasts, there is a dance studio for them to fulfill their passion. There is also a Ballet Theatre.
Apart from being a place which brings together people from various walks of life, the theatre was also instrumental during the years of freedom struggle witnessed by Africa. The theatre staged performances by artists who dwelled upon the then crucial issue of political struggle.
It created awareness among the people about the sacrifices that had been done by its eminent freedom fighters to bring to an end the years of racial disharmony that prevailed in Africa. As a gesture of gratitude, the theatre complex has a theatre named after Nelson Mandela. This theatre is large enough to easily seat more than a thousand people.
